The importance of surveys for forestry & rural estate management
Efficiently managing large areas of land and property requires clear information about a number of areas on your estate. Whether you want to prepare for selling rural land, fulfill your responsibilities as a landlord more effectively, or explore refurbishment and redevelopment potential, our land surveyors can support your plans.
Whilst an Ordnance Survey plan can be used in some circumstances, we assist you when you need more precise and detailed information.
Our estate mapping gives you vital data, including accurate layouts, property dimensions and records of site features. It ensures clarity to support your preparation and planning for the future, as well as the current management of the estate.
With up-to-date site and asset plans you can stay on top of a range of regular maintenance reports and legal matters. Accurate plans can help provide records for property valuation, insurance purposes, and investment decisions. Boundary surveys provide clarity around ownership and help with any new infrastructure and utility planning.
Ongoing rural land surveyors support
Our surveys also support better management and maintenance planning for an estate’s natural environment, including field parcels and woodland. They can help you to track land use, conservation efforts and sustainable upkeep more effectively.
As well as the regular day-to-day and long term plans, we can support you with event planning on the estate. From one-day events to seasonal experiences, our experienced team can help with laying out temporary structures precisely. What surveys could you need?
Why might you need a survey?
Whether it’s parts of the estate that are currently underused or adjacent land you’re considering acquiring, land surveys can help you to assess future potential. You might be considering developing the land, installing more efficient drainage, or new landscaping that could support the estate’s long term plans.
Our detailed surveys record key information. They can support regular estate management tasks including fire risk assessments, tree surveys, condition surveys, asbestos surveys and asset registers. Our detailed measured surveys of existing structures and land features can also inform any estate development and renovation plans.
As your estate grows, develops or changes, you should keep your plans up to date, especially if you’re buying or selling your rural land. We return to many sites and estates to record changes to our original surveys with new developments and land ownership and boundaries updates. We also work in close partnership with a number of specialists to cover areas such as below ground utility and drainage surveys.
A topographical survey maps key features of the land. It can be used as a base plan for developing your biodiversity, woodland and ecosystems management plans. From rivers and wetlands to fields and forests, you’ll gain a detailed overview of the estate’s natural features.
Other professionals can use these surveys to identify potential site issues, like erosion, habitat loss, flooding or drainage problems. With the right survey information, you can ensure the estate continues to function sustainably and conserve its habitats and species for the future.
Country and rural estate management usually covers large areas of land, so it’s important to accurately identify property boundaries. This allows for more effective management of adjacent land alongside other landowners. It can help prevent disputes as well as more effective management of ditches, hedgerows and dividing fences.
Boundary surveys are also useful for land sales, leases or subdivisions. As part of our land survey services, we support estate management by producing plans for the Land Registry process. This ensures new ownership details are registered correctly and provides an accurate record of what is being sold or leased.
Detailed records of a woodland or forest are essential for effective and efficient forestry management. Our topographical surveys give you an accurate map of the location, size and spread of the most important trees, which is a good starting point.
It enables other professionals to add their assessment, so you can build a robust asset register of the estate’s trees and woodland. This may record the type of trees, their condition and whether they are protected by a Tree Preservation Order.

New development and sustainable land management
The owner of a small woodland was planning to reinstate a track on the site from the main road to the middle of the site. Over several years it had become overgrown as well as a new turning circle and processing area for the timber.
